Former Attorney General of the UK and Wales Joins Arcanum

Co-President of Chatham House Baroness Patricia Scotland to serve as Senior Advisor to the CEO of Arcanum
Zurich/London/Washington DC, March 18, 2015 – Arcanum, a strategic global intelligence firm and an RJI Capital company, announced today that the Rt. Honourable, the Baroness of Asthal QC, Patricia Scotland has joined Arcanum as Senior Advisor to the CEO. Baroness Scotland comes to Arcanum with a prestigious career that spans the sectors of law, government, social justice and international affairs.
As the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, she was instrumental in reforming the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Consular Division to be able to respond more effectively to emergencies and disasters abroad, which proved critical in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. She is currently Co-President of Chatham House and Chair of the Advisory Board for Chatham House’s Academy for Leadership in International Affairs.

Baroness Scotland previously served as Shadow Attorney General (from 2010 – 2011) under Ed Miliband, and Attorney General for England and Wales (from 2007 – 2010) in the Labour Government under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. She was the first woman appointed to hold this position since its formation in 1315. As Attorney General, she was Chief Legal Advisor to: Her Majesty The Queen, Parliament and the Government, Supervisor and Superintendent of the Prosecutorial Authorities (SFO,CPS, RCPO), Leader of the Bar and had non-statutory oversight of the prosecutors in government departments, the Treasury Solicitors Department and armed services prosecuting authority. As Attorney General, she created the Quintet, which brought together the Attorneys General of the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to consider issues of joint legal systemic concern.
Prior to her appointment to the post of Attorney General, Baroness Scotland served as Minister of State for the Criminal Justice System and Law Reform at the Home Office and deputy to the Home Secretary, from 2003 – 2007.
From 2001 to 2003, she was Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor’s Department, and was made a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom.
From 1999 to 2001, Baroness Scotland was the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office where she was inter alia, responsible for the UK Government’s diplomatic relations with North America, the Caribbean, Overseas Territories, Consular Division, British Council, administration and all Parliamentary business in the House of Lords.
From 1997 to 2001, she was the Chair of The Carribbean Advisory Group and the architect of the Carribean Forum, which was created in 1998 to facilitate greater co-operation between the UK and the Carribean.
Baroness Scotland is a distinguished lawyer, becoming a QC in 1991, before receiving a life peerage in 1997.
She received her Bachelor of Laws from University of London in 1976.
